Connect the bot

Notifications come from your own bot, so you create it once in Telegram. Everything happens on the Connection tab of Settings›Notify for Telegram.

Connect your bot

  1. Create a bot. In Telegram, open @BotFather and send /newbot. Choose a name and a username; the username must end with “bot”.
  2. Copy the token. @BotFather answers with a token like 123456789:AAH…. Copy all of it.
  3. Paste and save. Paste the token into Bot token and press Save Changes. The page then shows “Connected to” and your bot’s name.

The token is sent only to api.telegram.org. Once a token is saved, the field stays empty: leave it empty to keep the bot, or paste a new token to change it.

Choose where to send

Press Find chats, then do one of these in Telegram. The plugin waits up to two minutes, and the chat appears in the list by itself, already selected.

  • To yourself: open your bot and press Start.
  • To a group or its topic: add the bot to the group, then send /start@your_bot in the group, or inside the topic you want. See Groups, topics and channels.
  • To a channel: add the bot as an admin allowed to post messages, then post anything in the channel.

You can also type the chat yourself in Chat ID: your user ID, a group ID (it starts with -100) or a channel @username.

Check it

Press Send test message. When it arrives in Telegram, press Save Changes to keep this chat.

Nothing came in two minutes?

Check that you wrote to the right bot, then press Find chats again. In a group, an ordinary message is not enough: send the command. More in The group is not found.
